Saving Your Natural Smile with Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is a common procedure designed to save your natural teeth and prevent the need for extractions or replacements like dental implants or bridges. At Dr. Samuel Cho, Family Dentistry, we provide gentle and comfortable root canal therapy to relieve your pain and preserve your smile.
What is a Root Canal?
Inside each of your teeth is a soft tissue called pulp, which contains blood vessels and nerves. When this pulp becomes infected or damaged, it can cause significant pain and discomfort, especially when you least expect it. Root canal therapy removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection.
When is Root Canal Therapy Needed?
Root canal therapy may be necessary if you experience:
- Severe and persistent toothache, especially if the pain lasts after you’re no longer biting down or enjoying a beverage
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums, which often go completely unnoticed or have areas of red inflammation
- Visible injury or discoloration of the tooth, like cracks, chips, or a cavity that’s exposing the pulp to outside stimuli

What to Expect During Root Canal Therapy
We understand that root canals can cause anxiety for some patients. At Dr. Samuel Cho, Family Dentistry, we strive to make your experience as comfortable as possible and offer various forms of Sedation Dentistry to help you feel calm and at ease.
- Local Anesthesia: We’ll use local anesthesia to completely numb the area around your affected tooth, ensuring you don’t feel any pain during your procedure. You’re in great hands, and you’ll feel a lot better after your appointment.
- Gentle Removal of Infected Pulp: Dr. Cho will carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth. Other than a light pressure, you won’t feel a thing.
- Thorough Cleaning and Shaping: We’ll clean and shape the inside of your tooth to prepare it for filling, creating a smooth and sterile space ready for reinforcing.
- Filling and Sealing: Lastly, Dr. Cho will fill your tooth with a special material and seal it to prevent further infection. A Dental Crown may be necessary to protect your natural tooth and restore your smile.
After Your Root Canal
After your root canal therapy, you may experience some mild discomfort for a few days. Your usual over-the-counter pain medication can usually manage this. You can go about your day as usual, but take it easy and avoid agitating the area, brushing gently until you feel your usual comfort restored.
