What are Dental Crowns?
Imagine a tooth-shaped “cap” that fits perfectly over a damaged or weakened tooth, sealing your natural tooth inside and giving it an extra layer of protection. It covers the entire visible part of your natural tooth, restoring its shape, size, and aesthetics! Crowns are also used in Dental Implants, acting as the replacement tooth that attaches to your implant post and completing your smile.
When Might You Need a Dental Crown?
There’s no one-size-fits-all fix when it comes to dentistry, and dental crowns are no exception. With a wide variety of uses, custom-made crowns are typically used if:
- You have a weakened tooth that’s at risk of breaking or fracturing.
- You have a tooth that’s already broken or fractured.
- You have a large filling and there’s not much of your natural tooth left.
- You want to improve the appearance of a misshapen or discolored tooth.
- You have a dental implant that needs a natural-looking restoration.
- You need to support a dental bridge to replace missing teeth.
- You’ve had a root canal and need to protect the treated tooth.
If you’re suffering from any of the above issues and need a solution that fits your smile, don’t hesitate to give us a call and schedule your appointment with our friendly team in Maple Valley, WA.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns offer numerous benefits for your oral health and overall well-being:
- Enhanced Appearance: Dental crowns can dramatically improve your smile by restoring the natural shape, size, and color of your teeth, and even be used to improve your smile instead of restoring it!
- Improved Oral Health: Dental crowns protect damaged teeth from further decay or damage, and give you a nice, even surface to brush comfortably without applying any friction to your natural tooth.
- Restored Comfort: Dental crowns can alleviate discomfort and make it easier to eat and speak without pain or sensitivity. Your custom-made crown acts as the perfect counterpart to give you a strong, natural bite.
- Long-lasting Solution: With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years, giving you a durable and reliable solution for your dental needs.
Porcelain Dental Crowns for a Natural Smile
We exclusively offer porcelain dental crowns for their beautiful aesthetics and long-lasting durability. Your porcelain crowns are carefully crafted to match the color and translucence of your surrounding natural teeth, blending into a seamless and beautiful result you’ll be proud to show off.
Since we match the porcelain to your existing shade, many of our patients choose to brighten their smile with professional teeth whitening before we begin. This allows us to craft your new crown to match your most radiant, refreshed smile.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Getting a dental crown typically involves two comfortable appointments at our practice:
- First Appointment: Dr. Cho will gently prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate your new crown. We’ll then take impressions of your teeth to create a custom-fit crown and place a temporary crown to protect your tooth while you wait.
- Second Appointment: Once your permanent crown is ready, we’ll remove the temporary crown and carefully cement the permanent crown in place, restoring your smile for years to come. We’ll take a few moments to make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable and perfect fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of a crown depends mainly on the tooth and how much preparation it needs first, such as a filling or a root canal. We exclusively use porcelain crowns, and Dr. Cho explains the cost of yours before treatment begins. We’re in-network with Delta Dental, Regence and several other plans, and our team will happily check your benefits. Our financial options page lists every plan.
Crowns typically last five to 15 years with proper care, and many last longer. Daily brushing and flossing around the gumline make the biggest difference, because the natural tooth under your crown still needs protecting from decay. At each checkup, we make sure your crown is still sealed and fitting well so a small issue gets handled early.
Getting a crown usually feels much like getting a filling. Dr. Cho numbs the area before he prepares the tooth, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. If dental visits make you anxious, ask about nitrous oxide or oral sedation, which we offer to help you relax. You’ll leave with a temporary crown protecting the tooth until your permanent one is ready.
Treat your temporary crown gently until your permanent crown is ready. Chew on the other side when you can and skip sticky foods like caramel. When you floss, slide the floss out to the side instead of pulling it up, which can loosen the temporary. If it does come off, call us right away so we can protect the tooth.
